Promising Future’s Center for
Independent Achievement

The Center for Independent Achievement (CIA) is Promising Futures, Inc.’s specialized day program providing day services and vocational training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a San Diego Regional Center–approved program, CIA supports individuals with diverse needs, including Autism and complex behavioral challenges, through structured, person-centered services that promote independence and meaningful community participation.

What sets Promising Futures apart is our commitment to continued learning. We incorporate structured teaching curricula focused on reading, writing, functional math, cognitive development, and communication skills. Participants also benefit from our dedicated Art Studio, which encourages creativity, self-expression, and skill-building. Through individualized programming, participants build life skills, social connections, and independence in a supportive and engaging environment.

The Adult Development Center (ADC) program, focuses on skill-building, independence, and daily living support in a supportive, growth-focused environment. Designed for individuals needing support with activities of daily living and structure, the program is a 1:4 staff-to-participant ratio. Using a person-centered, skills-based approach, participants build life skills, communication & social skills, vocational training, and community integration through structured programming. With general program supervision, staff provide support and redirection while tracking progress on their goals. The goal is to increase independence and confidence through consistent routines and meaningful daily engagement.

BMP

The Behavior Management Program (BMP) focuses on behavioral stabilization and skill development in a highly structured, therapeutic environment. Designed for individuals with significant behavioral challenges, the program provides a higher level of support based on individual needs. The program is a 1:3 staff-to-participant ratio. Behavior Support Plans are developed and monitored by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), who also provides staff training to ensure consistent implementation. Using a data-driven, behavior intervention approach, participants work on emotional regulation, coping strategies, and adaptive skills. The goal is to reduce maladaptive behaviors while increasing functional skills, independence, and overall stability.

7/11 Retail Support

Our clients participate in vocational training at two local 7-Eleven locations, one in Los Coaches and one in the College Area. At these sites, individuals assist with cleaning, organizing, and stocking tasks. Clients are required to wear uniforms, reinforcing workplace expectations, professionalism, and accountability. This site is especially valuable for teaching job readiness skills in an authentic community employment setting.

The tasks at this site include:

  • Deep-cleaning of shelves and counters
  • Restocking the many coolers and trash abatement in the parking lot and gas area.

Recycling

Our on-site recycling program provides consistent vocational opportunities for clients to assist with sorting and organizing recyclable materials both on and offsite. This program promotes responsibility, routine, environmental awareness, and task completion while allowing clients to contribute directly to the daily operations of the program.

They take pride in keeping both locations clean and eco-friendly through tasks like:

  • Sorting bottles, cans, and paper
  • Inspecting bins for trash or contamination
  • Cleaning and re-lining bins
  • Taking materials to the Santee Recycling Center

Community Shopping & Life Skills

Clients regularly participate in community shopping outings designed to build independent living skills. During these activities, individuals learn how to locate items, follow lists, make choices, manage money, and interact appropriately in community settings.

Their responsibilities include:

  • Collecting shopping lists from each location
  • Shopping for bulk items at the Santee Costco
  • Delivering items to the appropriate homes or programs

A smaller group of skilled adults handles non-bulk shopping, gaining everyday skills and responsibility.

Snack Shack (On-Site Vocational Program)

Our on-site Snack Shack provides clients with hands-on experience in basic business operations. Participants learn skills such as buying and selling items, stocking inventory, handling money, and practicing customer service. This program strongly supports money management, communication skills, and workplace readiness in a structured and supportive environment.

One example is our Snack Shack, a small store run daily by a dedicated member of our program. Responsibilities include:

  • Promoting and selling items
  • Creating a weekly restocking list
  • Joining the Costco team to purchase supplies

Food Pantry / The Closet

Through our Food Pantry program, clients actively give back by supporting local food rescue efforts. They pick up surplus items from partnered grocery stores and help deliver them to a community pantry.

Clients then assist with:

  • Organizing and distributing food
  • Playing an important role in supporting those facing food insecurity.

Transportation Services

Promising Futures offers reliable curb-to-curb transportation services for clients enrolled in our day program throughout the East County area. Our transportation program ensures safe, consistent travel to and from the program, providing peace of mind for families/careproviders and dependable access for participants. Staff are trained to support individuals with varying needs, ensuring a smooth and comfortable experience. This service promotes attendance, independence, and community access while removing transportation barriers for those we serve.
